Hearth and Stove

H&S_1

It’s hard to believe that Hearth to Stove only opened in Malton’s Market Place late in 2012 – as the business is thriving, planning and executing stove installations to a high level of excellence, and always with a smile, even when (as always seems to be the case) they are rushed off their feet with orders.

Fletchers of Norton

Fletchers_2

It is a beautiful spring morning in Malton. Behind me is St Michael’s Church, in front the Milton Rooms theatre. The sun beats down on a busy market square and thoughts turn, inevitably to tomorrow’s Sunday lunch. Where to go, to get just the thing for an increasingly large and ever hungry family? I am going on a short trip. A trip to the other side of the river. It will take around 10 minutes on foot, but bear with me, for at the end is a gem, and worth the shoe leather.
This is not to denigrate the butchers in Malton. If I want game, fresh and in season, I will find pheasant, rabbit, hare, duck, partridge and even jay hanging outside Derek Fox’s window. I could go to Overton’s, the ever happy, well stocked and friendly butcher. But I live in Norton, so a short detour on the way home will be fine. Wherever you live, the detour is worthwhile.

Derventio Wines (Tate-Smith)

Derventio_1

This is a Hidden Gem in more ways than one, as it is tucked away off Castlegate, just past the fire station. In 2010, when parent company the renowned wine distributors Tate-Smith reached the grand old age of 122 years, Paul Tate-Smith, MD of both businesses and the cheeky chappy of Malton for whom nothing is too much trouble, decided to launch his local wine showroom, Derventio Wines. Located a little off the beaten track, but actually in the middle of town Derventio is a beautifully designed shop next door to Tate-Smith’s warehouse, and with plenty of parking even for the most determined drinker or entertainer, Derventio is a fantastic place to select your wines, spirits, glasses and great gift ideas in a calm and beautiful setting.
