This is a Hidden Gem in more ways than one, as it is tucked away off Castlegate, just past the fire station. In 2010, when parent company the renowned wine distributors Tate-Smith reached the grand old age of 122 years, Paul Tate-Smith, MD of both businesses and the cheeky chappy of Malton for whom nothing is too much trouble, decided to launch his local wine showroom, Derventio Wines. Located a little off the beaten track, but actually in the middle of town Derventio is a beautifully designed shop next door to Tate-Smith’s warehouse, and with plenty of parking even for the most determined drinker or entertainer, Derventio is a fantastic place to select your wines, spirits, glasses and great gift ideas in a calm and beautiful setting.
Always with plenty of advice on hand from Paul or one of his faithful and welcoming team of experts, you can browse through excellent value wines to suit all pockets and choose one bottle or several cases. They have a huge array: wines from Argentina and Uruguay, California and Chile, Lebanon and the Loire, and still more French wines than you could shake a stick (or glass) at: most in normal sized bottles but you can pick a Jeroboam or Balthazar, too. There are opportunities to taste with plenty of expert guidance on tap. But in addition to all this there are unusual spirits and Champagnes, many offered in exciting gift boxes that would make perfect presents for that 21st birthday or Silver Wedding anniversary. I have come away with an unusual (was it Scottish?) gin in a beautiful bottle for my sister-in-law, and another day emerged proudly with a Belvedere Vodka for a 50th birthday in an extraordinary trompe l’oeil Perspex case: it was a struggle to give this one up, I wanted to keep it for myself!
Once you have made your selection staff will carry your cases to your car. And if you’ve decided to loan some glasses for your party, they’ll pack them in the boot for you too. For events of some size, Derventio are happy to let you take wines away on a sale or return basis, so this enables you to be sure you haven’t under catered. While you are settling up you are bound to see details of one of Derventio’s forthcoming tastings – they hold these regularly and details are on their website on in promotional pieces in the shop. These are inexpensive to attend and always informative and fun.
So one way or another whether treating yourself, buying ‘everyday’ vins du table, or looking for a truly unusual present, on your doorstep is the answer to your prayers: Derventio Wines. Paul Tate-Smith, a local through and through, is a terrific supporter of the local community and charitable causes, and his enthusiasm for all things entertaining is infectious and very much appreciated. Don’t miss Derventio – or you’ll regret it!
