Hayloft Foods, another fantastic business right here in Malton, was formed by Juliette Brown Forden in 2011. Juliette started out working from her own kitchen, but her soups have enjoyed such appeal that she has now moved Hayloft Foods to a commercial kitchen unit on the York Road Business Park; the business continues to thrive
Juliette makes all her soups without thickening agents as she believes they are not needed; instead she adds extra amounts of the delicious vegetables. All 11 Hayloft soups are vegetarian, gluten free and wheat free. I have to say the Squishy Squash & Tom (Roasted Butternut Squash & Tomato Soup) is to die for and I’m going to eat my way through all the others. The Saag Aloo & Rice (Spinach & Potato Curry Soup) is one of Yorkshire’s favourites.
When I was visiting the Food Lovers’ Market in March, I took this photograph of Juliette receiving the Bodysense Certificate of Excellence 2013, an award which commends her for the healthy ingredients in her soups.
If you think soups are not enough, Hayloft also makes fantastic pasta sauces and chutneys which you can now buy at all the farmers’ markets: Hovingham and Driffeld on the first Saturday of the month, Humber Bridge on the first Sunday and Malton on the last Saturday.
The soups can also be found in two of Malton’s shops: that wonderful deli, Malton Relish, and at Paley’s veg shop.
Nothing goes to waste as Juliette has a feathered team working alongside her: chickens Miranda, Stevie, Lola, Sassy, Tallulah and Louby Lou spend all day eating the vegetable trimmings. I hear they love the job and love the fact the Hayloft Foods is doing so well.
